Court pauses West L.A. VA housing order during appeal window
Federal officials have until December 10 to decide whether to seek Supreme Court review of the mandate for 1,800 permanent and 750 temporary units.

A federal appeals court temporarily paused an order requiring the Department of Veterans Affairs to add more than 2,500 housing units for unhoused veterans at its West Los Angeles campus, LAist reported October 1. The pause gives federal officials time to decide whether to ask the U.S. Supreme Court to review the case.
What it means locally
The underlying injunction calls for 1,800 permanent supportive homes within six years and 750 temporary units within 18 months. The Ninth Circuit denied a request for full-court rehearing on September 11, leaving the housing mandate in place, but the newer stay temporarily halts the order during the Supreme Court appeal window. LAist reported that the stay will lift immediately if the federal government does not pursue an appeal by December 10. The case was brought by veterans experiencing homelessness and centers on access to housing and medical services at the roughly 400-acre VA campus. The accompanying photograph shows a Wilshire Boulevard entrance to the campus in July 2022 and is archival; it does not depict current housing construction or the court proceeding.
