'Verity' tops box office with $32.6 million as 'Digger' struggles
Amazon MGM's psychological thriller led North American theaters while the costly Tom Cruise satire opened with $8 million domestically.
Verity debuted at No. 1 with an estimated $32.6 million in North American ticket sales, according to weekend figures reported Sunday by the Associated Press and Barron's. The adaptation of Colleen Hoover's novel stars Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson and was directed by Michael Showalter.
A strong worldwide opening
The R-rated thriller added about $30 million internationally, bringing its estimated worldwide opening to $62.6 million. Its domestic total was greater than the next two movies combined, according to the Rentrak figures cited by Barron's.
A difficult debut for Warner Bros.
Warner Bros.' Digger, directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu and starring Tom Cruise, opened with an estimated $8 million in North America and $12 million internationally. The Associated Press described the result as one of Cruise's weakest debuts. The opening arrives as Warner Bros. approaches its merger with Paramount, giving the weekend added significance for Southern California's studio business.
