Thirty-six Starbucks locations across Southern California appear headed for closure as the company cuts about 250 coffeehouses in North America, the Los Angeles Times reported in a September 27 story updated September 28. The Times said the stores no longer appeared in the Starbucks app and were either marked permanently closed on Google or did not answer calls.

What it means locally

The likely closures include stores in Los Angeles, Burbank, Santa Monica, Pasadena, Orange County, the Inland Empire and San Diego County. Starbucks did not confirm the individual locations to the Times, so the list should not be treated as a company-issued closure roster. In a September 24 statement, Starbucks said it selected stores where it did not see a path to the customer experience or financial performance it expects. The company said it would offer transfer opportunities where possible and severance support to workers it could not place. The accompanying photograph shows a Starbucks in Orange in 2018 and is not one of the 36 locations identified in the report.
