San Diego County unveils Senior Safe Harbor tax-help program
The five-part initiative is designed to help homeowners age 65 and older address property-tax problems before they threaten housing stability.
The San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector announced Senior Safe Harbor on Monday, combining priority customer service, hardship review, proactive outreach and connections to existing relief programs.
Eligibility focus: San Diego County homeowners age 65 and older
Priority review target: 10 business days
Tax collection questions: 1-877-829-4732
Status: The county says assistance details are still being finalized
Five paths to assistance
The program's priority lane gives eligible seniors a dedicated contact and expedited review. Medical-hardship support may allow qualifying homeowners to request cancellation of property-tax penalties under state law, with each case reviewed individually.
The office also plans outreach before deadlines, help connecting seniors with California's Property Tax Postponement Program, and education through aging-service and community partners. A future relief fund is intended to provide one-time help for qualifying homeowners facing extraordinary hardship.
What the program does not promise
Senior Safe Harbor does not eliminate an underlying property-tax bill or guarantee penalty cancellation, financial assistance or protection from foreclosure. The Treasurer-Tax Collector's official page currently labels the program “coming soon” and says more information about requesting help will be posted after final details are completed.
