San Diego County adds forecasting as flu indicators rise
San Diego County’s revised respiratory-virus report now projects hospitalization trends two weeks ahead, giving residents and health providers an earlier view of possible changes in flu, COVID-19 and RSV activity.
The county announced the update Friday as its latest surveillance data showed influenza test positivity at 8% for the week ending October 3. The report counted 58 influenza-positive hospital admissions that week and 262 since the 2026–27 season began July 5.
Latest data: Through October 3
Influenza test positivity: 8%
Influenza-positive admissions: 58 for the latest reported week
Forecast window: Two weeks
How the new forecast works
The hospitalization outlook uses recent local trends and statistical models to estimate whether COVID-19-, influenza- and RSV-related admissions are likely to rise, fall or remain stable. The charts also show 90% prediction intervals to make the forecast’s uncertainty visible.
The county cautions that the surveillance figures are preliminary and may change as reports arrive. Hospitalization totals include patients who tested positive when admitted and do not necessarily mean the respiratory virus was the main reason for hospitalization.
