Mayor asks LADWP to pause residential shutoffs through year-end
Los Angeles says residential customers who cannot pay their water or power bills will not have service disconnected for the remainder of 2026.
Mayor Karen Bass asked the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power Board to pause residential water and electricity shutoffs through December 31 for customers facing higher bills after recent heat waves. Her office said customers unable to pay will not have service turned off during that period.
Shutoff protection: Through December 31, 2026 for residential customers unable to pay
Usage information: LADWP plans to begin providing it to every residential customer in November
Payment programs: Level Pay, EZ-SAVE and Lifeline
Payment and conservation options
The city encouraged customers to use Level Pay, which averages bills over 12 months to make payments more predictable. Income-qualified households can also review EZ-SAVE, while qualifying older adults and people with disabilities may be eligible for the Lifeline program.
LADWP also plans to give residential customers information about their water and electricity use beginning next month, with the goal of helping households understand consumption and identify conservation options.
