Measure ER adds a half percentage point to the countywide rate for five years; combined city rates vary and reach 11% or more in several communities.

Los Angeles County’s general sales tax rises from 9.75% to 10.25% on October 1 under Measure ER, which voters approved in June, FOX 11 Los Angeles reported September 30. The California Department of Tax and Fee Administration’s updated rate table confirms a 10.25% rate for Los Angeles and the county base.
What it means locally
The half-point increase is scheduled to last five years. County officials say the general-fund revenue is intended to support health care, safety-net providers, county hospitals and clinics, public-health programs and other services. Total rates differ because cities may add local taxes: the state table lists Long Beach, Pasadena and West Hollywood at 11%, Santa Monica at 11.25%, and Lancaster and Palmdale at 11.75%. Groceries, prescription medicines and certain medical equipment remain exempt. Consumers and businesses should use the state’s current rate lookup for the exact rate at a specific address.
