LA28 reveals first details for Venice Beach triathlon courses
Olympic and Paralympic triathlon events will use loop-style courses centered at Venice Beach, with a shared transition area and coastal finish line.
LA28 says the Olympic individual races will combine a 1,500-meter ocean swim, a 40-kilometer bike course and a 10-kilometer run through Venice. Paralympic individual races will include a 750-meter swim, 20-kilometer bike course and 5-kilometer run. The women’s Olympic event on July 15, 2028 is scheduled to award the first medals of the Games, and organizers plan to test the routes at a World Triathlon event in July 2027.
What it means locally
The Olympic individual course will begin with a beach start and two swim laps totaling 1,500 meters. Athletes will then complete eight 5-kilometer bike laps and four 2.5-kilometer run laps through the Venice area before finishing near the transition zone overlooking the coast.
The Paralympic course will use the same central event area, with a 750-meter swim, 20-kilometer bike ride and 5-kilometer run. LA28 plans a July 2027 World Triathlon event on the courses to assess operations before the Games.
