La Mesa secures $1.5 million for long-planned Waite Drive park

La Mesa has secured $1.5 million in state funding for a proposed neighborhood park, but the approximately $8 million project still needs another $6.5 million.

ABC 10News reported Thursday night that the funding advances plans to turn the vacant property at Waite Drive and Murray Hill Road into a community gathering space.

State funding secured: $1.5 million

Estimated project cost: $8 million

Remaining funding gap: $6.5 million

Construction still depends on additional funding

The City of La Mesa’s project record identifies the property as a 2.84-acre former transit facility site purchased by the city in 2012. The city said construction documents were 80% complete as of June, but no construction date had been set because the project still needed funding.

City Councilmember Laura Lothian told ABC 10News that staff and the Parks and Recreation Department will pursue additional grants. Nearby residents said the park would give families a new outdoor gathering place and improve a long-vacant lot.
