Padres add Joe Musgrove to postseason roster after two-season absence
The San Diego native returns from Tommy John surgery as the Padres open a home Wild Card Series against the Chicago Cubs.

The San Diego Padres added right-hander Joe Musgrove to their postseason roster on September 29 after he missed the past two seasons following Tommy John surgery, Reuters reported. San Diego activated Musgrove from the 60-day injured list and opened a 40-man roster spot by placing catcher Rodolfo Duran on the 60-day injured list.
What it means locally
Musgrove last pitched in the 2024 Wild Card round, leaving a start against Atlanta with elbow tightness before undergoing surgery. Recovery setbacks limited the 33-year-old to four minor-league rehabilitation appearances in 2026. The El Cajon native has a 66–62 record and 3.73 ERA across nine major-league seasons and was an All-Star with San Diego in 2022. The Padres open their best-of-three Wild Card Series against the Chicago Cubs at Petco Park on Tuesday night.
