Becerra and Hilton clash in California governor debate
The candidates drew sharp contrasts on homelessness, household costs, taxes, immigration and President Trump during their only scheduled televised debate.

Democrat Xavier Becerra and Republican Steve Hilton debated in Los Angeles on September 30 in the sole televised matchup of the California governor’s race, the Associated Press reported. Their exchanges focused on homelessness, household costs, high taxes, immigration and their differing views of President Donald Trump.
What it means locally
Hilton cast himself as a change candidate after years of Democratic control and argued for lower taxes, utility bills and gasoline prices. Becerra emphasized his experience in state and federal government and repeatedly linked Hilton to Trump’s policies and rhetoric. The debate came just before mail ballots were expected to begin arriving for the November 3 election.
