Emergency mosquito treatments scheduled in Altadena and Monterey Park
Vector-control crews scheduled overnight truck treatments for October 7 and 8 after elevated mosquito activity created a public-health risk.
The San Gabriel Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District scheduled residential mosquito-control treatments in parts of Altadena and Monterey Park between midnight and 5:30 a.m. Wednesday and Thursday.
Altadena: Between Glenrose and Marengo avenues, south of East Mariposa Street and north of West Woodbury Road
Monterey Park: Between West Floral Drive and the 60 Freeway, east of Vancouver Avenue and west of Collegian Avenue
Timing: Midnight to 5:30 a.m. on October 7 and 8, weather and operations permitting
What crews are applying
The district said truck crews would use ultra-low-volume adulticide in both treatment areas to reduce adult mosquitoes. In Altadena, crews also planned a biological larvicide treatment for water sources containing immature mosquitoes. Weather or operational problems could postpone or delay the work.
ABC7 reported Wednesday that the region’s intense heat has accelerated mosquito breeding. The district said the treatments are intended to reduce mosquito populations that pose a significant public-health risk and lower the chance of mosquito-borne disease.
What residents can do
District guidance asks residents to empty standing water, maintain pools and spas, change water in pet dishes and birdbaths weekly, and report neglected pools. For bite prevention, it recommends EPA-registered repellent and light-colored long sleeves and pants.
