New aerial views show Agoura Hills wildlife crossing nearing opening
The planted bridge over ten lanes of the 101 Freeway is scheduled to open to wildlife on December 2.
New drone video and photographs show native vegetation spreading across the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing in Agoura Hills as the project approaches its planned December opening, NBC Los Angeles reported Wednesday.
Location: Liberty Canyon over the 101 Freeway in Agoura Hills
Opening: December 2, 2026, for wildlife
Span: Ten freeway lanes
Purpose: Reconnect habitat in the Santa Monica Mountains for mountain lions and other species
Restoring a divided habitat
The crossing is designed to give wildlife a route over the freeway between areas of habitat that have long been separated by traffic. Project partners say the connection is especially important for the region’s mountain lions, whose movement and genetic diversity have been constrained by roads and development.
The new aerial views show a landscaped surface rather than a conventional concrete overpass. Native plants raised for the project cover the deck, helping the structure blend into the surrounding ecosystem.
Opening date confirmed
The project’s official website confirms that the crossing is scheduled to open to animals on December 2. It describes the structure as a public-private partnership involving conservation groups and transportation agencies.
